Matobo’s Rhodes Stables gutted by fire

The Rhodes Stables, a National Monument and one of the oldest buildings in Zimbabwe, was burnt down on May 31st, 2020, the Matobo Conservation Society announced.

“We held our AGM there in 2014. A very sad loss to our National Heritage,” expressed the Society on their official Facebook page.

According to the Chronicle, property worth US$25 000 was destroyed in the fire where the police are yet to establish the cause.

The Rhodes Stables is located in Matobo National Park about 35 km south of Bulawayo and was built in 1897.

The monument was once used as a library by the Department of National Museums and Monuments where archived literature was kept.
