South Africa’s Department of Transport is planning to introduce a new High-Speed Rail network in South Africa.
Speaking during a Joint Meeting: Portfolio Committee on Transport and Select Committee on Transport, Public Service and Administration, Public Works and Infrastructure on May 6, 2020, director-general of the Department of Transport, Alec Moemi, expressed that the framework and development of the project has already been implemented.
“We are looking at this being funded by investment funding and we are also looking at a private sector participation framework for concessioning of branch lines to allow new players into this,” added Moemi.
He said that on Cargo, Transnet had the right of first refusal as the branch lines belonged to them.
The project has been given a five year development target and the whole presentation can be found here.
