Global sports, events and talent management company and Rallycross series promoter, International Management Group (IMG), has announced that Cape Town is not included in the provisionally updated 2020 World Rallycross Championship Calendar.
According to iol.co.za, the Cape Town leg of the 2020 championship was set to take place on November 14 and 15, with another taking place in 2021, but with the revision of the calendar compelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, the events have been pushed back by one year, with the rounds now pegged for 2021 as well as 2022.
The Group pointed out that the 2020 cancellation has nothing to do with the quality of previous events but that the season has now been reduced to 21 weeks, an insufficient time to ship cars to South Africa and back again.
“We will just have to keep our excitement at bay until 2021,” said event secretary Lizelle van Rensburg.
Rensburg added that the cancellation was probably for the best as there was currently no indication as to when the restrictions on sporting events in South Africa would be lifted.
The restructured 2020 calendar will have the season starting in Sweden on from August 20 to 23, 2020 with nine round and two taking place in Abu Dhabi.
