Mozambique declares a State of Emergency for 30 days

The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, has declared the State of Emergency for 30 days from midnight April 1, 2020 to curb to spread of COVID-19.

During the period, the movement of individuals in Mozambique will be limited and all kinds of public and private meetings, such as sports, cultural activities and religious ceremonies, will be prohibited.

“Guided by the supreme interest in safeguarding public health, for every Mozambican and foreigners residing in our country, we decided to require mandatory quarantine for all citizens who have recently returned to the country or have had contact with the confirmed cases of COVID-19,” said President Nyusi during a live broadcast.

He added that the government would shut down entertainment establishments, monitor the prices of essential goods for the population and redirect the industrial sector toward the production of materials needed to fight the pandemic.

Mozambique has recorded eight confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far.
