The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust, a conservation partnership between Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Frankfurt Zoological Society, celebrated the opening of the newly constructed Nkwangulatilo ‘rainbow’ Causeway on Monday the 16th December, 2019.
The structure connects the North of Gonarezhou National Park to the South, giving ease of access over the Runde River throughout the year.
Runde river dissects through the park sometimes cutting a half mile width which is hard to navigate especially during the rain season. This bridge will allow for easy access to the other pristine areas of the park on the South.
The bridge was contractors were Total Property Solutions through the financial support of a non-profit called The Oak Foundation. Present at the official opening were officials from the Zimbabwe Ministry of Tourism, the local Member of Parliament , three Paramount Chiefs of the area, Chief Sengwe, Chief Mahenya and Chief Tshovani, their traditional headmen and representatives of Zimbabwe’s Parliament and National Parks.
Tucked away in the relatively remote South-East Lowveld of Zimbabwe, spreading over more than 5 000 km², Gonarezhou National Park is the country’s second largest national park, after Hwange National Park. It forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park linking Gonarezhou with the Kruger National Park in South Africa and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, with animals moving freely between the three sanctuaries.
